Russia and China Veto U.S. Call for Gaza Ceasefire at UN Security Council


(New York Times) Alan Yuhas - A U.S. bid to have the UN Security Council call for "an immediate and sustained ceasefire" in Gaza failed on Friday, after Russia and China vetoed the American resolution. Eleven members voted in favor of the resolution, while Russia and China - permanent members with veto power - voted against it, as did Algeria. Guyana abstained. The U.S. had vetoed three previous resolutions demanding a stop to the fighting in Gaza.
