Palestinian Teachers in 3rd Week of Strike

(Al-Araby Al-Jadeed-UK) Qassam Muaddi - Palestinian public school teachers gathered in Ramallah on Monday to demand independent union representation and an increase in their salaries in the third week of a strike. "This isn't about resources, it's about control," said Issam Abdeen, a human rights lawyer who has been assisting the teachers' movement. "The Palestinian Authority is panicked by the idea of independent social movements because its leadership hasn't been elected for 17 years, and it has concentrated all powers in the hands of a few. The teachers' movement is only a symptom of growing social pressure, part of which is also due to the lack of elections, the absence of a legislative power, the shrinking independence of the [PA] judiciary, and lack of social dialogue. This social pressure can only be eased through deep democratic reform, including elections."
