(Washington Post) Liz Sly - The Syrian army broke a three-year siege by the Islamic State on an enclave of the eastern Syrian city of Deir al-Zour on Tuesday. The victory set the stage for a race to control the rest of Deir al-Zour province, which the U.S. has been preparing to liberate from Islamic State fighters. The Syrian army was aided in the fight by Iranian-backed militias, Russian advisers, and Russian airstrikes.
