France Thwarts a New Terrorist Attack

(New York Times) Benoit Morenne - On Monday the French government announced the arrest of seven men in Strasbourg and Marseille who were planning a terrorist attack, sounding an alert about the continuing threat from terrorism barely a year after attacks that killed 130 people in and around Paris. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said investigators were looking into the possibility that the plot involved a "coordinated attack aimed to hit several sites simultaneously" in the country. The arrests "thwarted a terrorist attack that had been envisaged on our soil for a long time." The men arrested ranged in age from 29 to 37 and were a mix of French, Moroccan and Afghan citizens. Five people suspected of having links to the same network were arrested on June 14, and two were kept in custody. The arrests were not made public at the time. Cazeneuve said 418 people had been arrested in relation to terrorist networks since the beginning of the year, including 43 this month.
