Is the Jordanian Monarchy in Danger?


(Crown Center for Middle East Studies-Brandeis University) Asher Susser - Notwithstanding cracks in the edifice of the East Banker elite in Jordan, the fractious opposition has yet to come up with a viable alternative. Even opponents tend to see the Hashemite regime as the thing that holds the country together. The situation, therefore, remains manageable. As long as the unswerving loyalty of the security establishment lasts, the capacity of the regime to continue muddling through will depend more on its ability to deal effectively with the economy than on any other single factor, including the pace of political reform. Dr. Asher Susser is a Senior Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University.
