France Jails Ten Islamic Militants in Christmas Market Bomb Plot


(Reuters) A French court jailed 10 Islamic militants on Thursday for their role in a failed plot to bomb a popular Christmas market in Strasbourg, sentencing two of the ringleaders to 10 years in prison each. Public prosecutor Christophe Teissier said the decision to carry out the attack had been taken in Afghanistan, where the conspirators had all undergone military training. Abou Zoubeida, a right-hand man of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is believed to have helped plan the Strasbourg attack, which was foiled when German police carried out raids in Frankfurt on December 25, 2000, following a tip-off from French intelligence. Police seized chemicals, detonators, and a surveillance video of the proposed site for the attack.
