U.S.: Disengagement Offers "Opportunity for Progress and a Return to the Political Process"

(State Department) Deputy State Department Spokesman Adam Ereli said Tuesday, "It is America's belief that the Gaza disengagement plan, as presented by Prime Minister Sharon, offers a real opportunity for progress and a return to the political process. Israeli disengagement from Gaza, if done in a way consistent with the roadmap and with the support of the international community, has the potential to move both parties closer to a realization of the president's two-state vision." "Clearly the withdrawal from Gaza offers the opportunity to give Palestinians control over an important part of territory, to give the Palestinians responsibility for their own affairs....There's still a Palestinian Authority responsible for the state of affairs in the Palestinian Authority."
