(Council on Foreign Relations) David Makovsky - Sharon has come around to the view that Arafat does not want a Palestinian state, that this is only something that he'll say he favors in an interview with CNN, and what he really wants is to play for time. He feels it's better to take pre-emptive action and set back the demographic clock. Taking down settlements will be perhaps the most gut-wrenching internal process that Israel has gone through since its formation.
