Some Allies Reconsider Their Occupation Roles


(Washington Post) The U.S. assembled forces from 34 countries to help it in Iraq, but diplomatic strains have begun to emerge. Britain and Italy have made clear that they will continue to stand and fight, but many countries with smaller forces in Iraq have begun to raise questions about their future roles. South Korea has ordered its personnel to suspend activities outside military camps. The Ukrainian government said its troops were evacuating Kut. The Bulgarian president called an emergency meeting on Wednesday to review the security of Bulgarian soldiers in Iraq. And the government of Kazakhstan announced that it would not extend its presence beyond May.
