[Der Spiegel-Germany] German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday said the blame for renewed violence in the Middle East can be pinned on Hamas. Speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Olmert by phone, she said responsibility for the Israeli air offensive against Hamas in Gaza lies "clearly and exclusively" with Hamas. A statement on the Chancellery Web site referred to Israel's "legitimate right" to defend its people and territory.
