(Ha'aretz) Bar Peleg - U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff met in Tel Aviv on Tuesday with families of Israeli hostages, one of whom asked, "Why aren't you forcing the Israeli government to stop the war?" Witkoff responded, "We're not the Israeli government. We don't disagree. The Israeli government is a sovereign government. They can't tell us what to do, and we can't tell them what to do. You're our ally. It's not for us to tell a sovereign country how to engage in foreign policy. It's just not." There "may be a lot of things that you're not aware of that the Israeli government is doing that's actually helpful. And there's just things that can't be said or can't be talked about....But you have an elected government today. We have to be working with them. They are at the table with the negotiating team in Doha."
