U.S. Carries Out New Strikes Against Houthi Targets in Yemen

(Washington Post) Dan Lamothe - U.S. forces carried out strikes on 14 missiles that the Houthis had "loaded to be fired" in a growing campaign to stifle repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, U.S. officials said Wednesday. The missiles were on launch rails and "presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships and could have been fired at any time," prompting U.S. forces to strike in self-defense. The strikes were carried out with Tomahawk missiles from at least one warship and one submarine. The Houthis have continued to carry out attacks on commercial vessels. On Tuesday, a one-way attack drone launched from Yemen hit the M/V Genco Picardy, a U.S.-owned cargo ship. The vessel suffered some damage but remained seaworthy. Pentagon spokesman Maj.-Gen. Patrick Ryder said Tuesday that the Houthis have conducted "attacks against the ships and vessels from more than 50 countries."
