Retirees' Self-Help in Israeli Schools

(Christian Science Monitor) Danna Harman - In Israel, 3,000 retired nurses, lawyers, bankers, carpenters, teachers, CEOs, and secretaries are helping to support the schools - pensioners who use their powers to help grade schoolers improve their spelling and practice their math. It's good for the kids and good for the retirees, who enjoy a sense of community and purpose. Yadid Lahinuch, Hebrew for "Friend of Education," founded 16 years ago, takes the common wisdom that "old people" are a weak community in need of volunteers to help them - and turns it on its head.
