Many of the rioters are residents of eastern Jerusalem and call themselves the gang of al-Aqsa. Their numbers are in the hundreds. According to sources, they are led by Nihad Zreiyer, 43, who is close to Fatah. The group is funded by the Palestinian Authority, local residents, and funding from Turkey. They smuggled fireworks, rocks and other objects to hurl at the police into the mosque compound over several days and stored them in several locations.
