U.S. Forces Expand Reach in Saudi Arabia

(Wall Street Journal) Gordon Lubold - The U.S. military has been using an array of ports and air bases in Saudi Arabia's western desert, developing basing options over the past year to use in the event of a conflict with Iran. "What it does is to give us options," said Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia are negotiating plans for investments in infrastructure for ports in coastal Yanbu as well as air bases at Tabuk and Taif, to make them more usable for the U.S. military. The Saudis would pay for the infrastructure improvements.
