Report: Turkey Opens Secret Channel with Israel

(Al-Monitor) Amberin Zaman - The chief of Turkey's national intelligence service, Hakan Fidan, has been holding secret talks with Israeli officials, three well-placed sources have told Al-Monitor. There is mounting worry in Ankara that the incoming Biden administration will be less indulgent of Turkish President Erdogan's bellicosity. The biggest concern is that Biden will not shield Turkey from sanctions over its purchase of Russian S-400 missiles and for Turkish state lender Halkbank's role in facilitating Iran's multibillion-dollar illicit oil for gold trade. One source aired skepticism at the prospects of a real reset in relations with Israel "as long as Turkey continues to be the global headquarters for Hamas."
