Israeli Officials Question U.S. Concerns over Chinese Intelligence-Gathering at Haifa Port

(Ha'aretz) Osnat Nir - Amid mounting U.S. pressure to adopt a tougher stance on a Chinese presence at Haifa Port out of espionage fears, Israeli officials are countering that the concerns are overwrought. One senior government source said that if the Chinese "want to gather intelligence, they can simply rent an apartment in Haifa instead of investing in ownership of a port." An Israeli official who was involved in awarding the contract said, "Chinese ships dock all over the world. At any given moment, there's a Chinese ship at every port, so why would they need to invest in operating a port?"
