(IHS Jane's Defence Weekly) Yaakov Lappin - Israel Air Force (IAF) Heron 1 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are playing a growing role in maritime patrol and intelligence gathering missions. Lt.-Col. A, commander of the IAF's "First UAV Squadron," said, "The trend is to transfer as many missions from manned platforms like those conducted by Seascan [maritime patrol] planes, to unmanned platforms. This decreases risk to personnel...and is efficient from a budgetary standpoint."
