By striking Hamas, Israel hopes to force it to prevent the more extreme groups in Gaza from firing rockets. "If you're in charge, you're in charge. That's the policy," a military official said, referring to Hamas rule in Gaza. IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said that the rocket fire from Gaza was the "direct result of Hamas' terror agenda in the Gaza Strip that encourages deliberate attacks against Israeli civilians."
