(New York Times) Anne Barnard - Zahran Alloush, commander of the Army of Islam, one of the most powerful Syrian insurgent groups, was killed Friday in a Russian airstrike in the suburbs of Damascus. The Army of Islam was an enemy of the Islamic State and was seen as crucial in keeping IS from encroaching closer to Damascus.
