Selling the Desert's Water-Conservation Lessons to the Rest of the World

(Atlantic) Saki Knafo - Israeli engineer Simcha Blass invented a button-like valve that emits just the right amount of water in drip irrigation. Today, the Israeli firm Netafim sells its irrigation systems in 110 countries, with annual revenues of more than $750 million and a workforce of more than 4,000. With a 30% market share, it's the leading drip-irrigation company in the world. The Indian government is subsidizing a shift away from flood irrigation, paying for half of every system purchased from Netafim and its competitors.
