The Tunnel Threat on Gaza's Border

(Ha'aretz) Gili Cohen - In less than two years, five border-crossing tunnels have been discovered in Israeli territory. The digging is quite elaborate: The tunnels are connected to electricity and usually include a number of branches inside Israeli territory. Even after Thursday's discovery of a tunnel from Gaza to near Kibbutz Sufa, the Israel Defense Forces estimate that there are a number of additional tunnels that cross the border and are designed for carrying out attacks inside Israeli territory. "The principle guiding Hamas is to move the fighting to our territory - whether by means of terror attacks or by subterranean means," explained a senior IDF Southern Command officer. "It's impossible to deal with the subterranean (tunnels) with aerial attacks, only by entering the area."
