Kerry Lauds Nonexistent Iranian Fatwa Banning Nuclear Weapons

(MEMRI) In a March 22, 2014, Voice of America interview marking the Persian New Year, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that he and President Obama were "grateful" that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had issued a fatwa banning the possession, development, and use of nuclear weapons. As MEMRI has reported repeatedly, no one has ever actually seen this fatwa and it does not exist. It does not appear in the 2013 compilation of 493 fatwas issued by Khamenei. Khamenei did discuss nuclear weapons in a Friday sermon in 2004, but a sermon is not a legal ruling. Khamenei maintains two websites which include a special section devoted to fatwas that he has issued. They do not include a fatwa on the topic of banning nuclear weapons.
