Israeli Doctors Grow Human Kidneys in Mice

(Reuters/Times of India) Israeli scientists have successfully grown human kidneys in mice, a breakthrough that might one day help save thousands of patients waiting for kidney transplants who die before a suitable donor is found. According to a report in Nature Medicine journal, the researchers, led by Dr. Yair Reisner of the Weizmann Institute of Science, transplanted stem cells from human and pig fetuses into mice. The kidneys grew into functional mouse-sized organs, filtering the blood and producing urine.
