U.S. Expands Cooperation with Iraqi Opposition Groups

Landay - President Bush signed a classified order last month that added at least six Iraqi opposition groups to the seven already approved to receive U.S. financial aid, humanitarian assistance, and military training under the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act. Invasion plans being drawn up by the U.S. military call for opposition members to work closely with U.S. forces as translators, guides, and scouts. They also may guard Iraqi prisoners of war and help keep the peace between Iraq's disparate religious and ethnic groups after Saddam's ouster.
