Israel's Proposed New Defense Minister

(New York Times) - Lt. Gen. Shaul Mofaz, whose four years as Israeli army chief of staff ended in July, has been tapped by Sharon to replace Benjamin Ben-Eliezer as defense minister. Born in Iran, Mofaz immigrated to Israel at age 9. After high school, he volunteered for the paratroopers and served during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, before he began climbing through a series of command positions.
