The Barghouti Trial

(New York Times) - The president of the three-judge panel, Sara Sirota, urged Mr. Barghouti to use a lawyer, but he refused. "I am a freedom fighter, fighting for the freedom of my people and peace between the two peoples," he said in Hebrew. Someone fighting for peace, Judge Sirota fired back, "doesn't turn people into bombs and kill children." Barghouti responded, "I don't want to get into that." Israeli spokesman Daniel Taub explained that the case was not about Mr. Barghouti's political views, but about the killings.
