Syrian Death Toll Approaches 93,000, U.N. Says

(New York Times) David Jolly - Civilians are bearing the brunt of the fighting in Syria, Navi Pillay, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said Thursday, with 92,901 killings documented there through the end of April, a number that may understate the magnitude of the violence that has devastated cities and villages across the country for 25 months. Ms. Pillay cautioned that the estimate was conservative, and that "the true number of those killed is potentially much higher." The UN was unable to state definitively what proportion of those killed had been combatants. Ms. Pillay said the killings of "at least 6,561 minors, including at least 1,729 children under 10 years old" were documented, and that there were "well-documented cases of individual children being tortured and executed, and entire families, including babies, being massacred - which is a terrible reminder of just how vicious this conflict has become."
