Egypt's Birthrate Rises as Population Control Policies Vanish

(New York Times) Kareem Fahim - While the government of Hosni Mubarak expanded family planning programs and publicity campaigns to curtail population growth that he blamed for crippling Egypt's development, Egypt's birthrate has now surged to a 20-year high. Last year, there were 2.6 million births, bringing the population to about 84 million.
