(New York Times)Eric Lipton - The U.S. Army has been using a new tool called the Urban Tactical Planner, which combines advanced computer software with high-resolution imagery beamed down from commercial satellites. U.S. commanders were able to take a three-dimensional virtual tour of a mazelike section of Mosul before the first troops entered the area, pinpointing ambush spots and places that afforded soldiers protection from sniper fire.
