Alert Declared in Southern Israel as Locusts Reach Sinai

(Ha'aretz)Amiram Cohen - The Plant Protection and Inspection Services declared a state of high alert in the south of the country Thursday, fearing that swarms of locusts would head toward Israel's coastal region from the Sinai Peninsula. Keith Cressman, locust forecasting officer for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, said the locust plague was the worst in 15 years. Anyone who comes into contact with large-sized grasshoppers with yellowish coloring is asked to report the incident to the plant protection services.
