[New York Times] David S. Cloud - Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday that he had reassured Israel that a planned major American arms sale to Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries would not threaten Israel's military superiority and was necessary to counter a threat from Iran. Gates emphasized that Iran posed a greater threat to Israel than did the Arab countries that were to receive the sophisticated weaponry.
