Bin Laden Offers "Truce" to Europe

(RAI/State Department) Osama bin Laden offered on Thursday to stop terrorist actions in European countries that ended military action in Muslim nations. The offer was made on an audiotape broadcast by two Arab satellite television stations and is believed by the CIA to be authentic. He said, "The door to a truce is open for three months," adding that it could be extended. "The truce will begin when the last soldier leaves our countries." The offer is "an attempt to divide the international community and it cannot be allowed to succeed," Jack Straw, the British foreign minister, responded. (New York Times) Asked if bin Laden's truce offer could succeed, Secretary of State Colin Powell replied, "How can you make a deal with a terrorist?...You can't deal with somebody like this. There is only one way to deal with him and that is to destroy him."
