Israeli Researchers Win Canadian Medical Science Award

(Canadian Jewish News) Jenny Hazan - Two Israeli recipients of this year's prestigious Canada Gairdner International Awards are professors Chaim Cedar and Aharon Razin - researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The prizes are worth $100,000 and are awarded to seven scientists annually in recognition of achievements that "contribute significantly to improving the quality of human life." The Israeli winners were honored for their work on DNA methylation, a basic chemical process that turns parts of each cell's genetic code on and off. Their work is related to new approaches to cancer treatment. The idea is that if the methylation that causes cancer can be stopped, or prevented, so, too, can cancer. "They...have provided insight into our basic understanding of how cells grow and develop and become cancerous," said chair of the foundation's board, Lorne Tyrrell.
