The Squeeze on Hamas

(Chicago Tribune) Editorial - Hamas is a terrorist organization that promised to wipe Israel from the map. When a suicide bomb exploded in Tel Aviv a few weeks ago, Hamas applauded. Hamas is standing firm in its hatred: It will not recognize Israel, renounce violence, or hew to previous agreements. No one argues with sending medicine to the Palestinians. But Western governments must be careful that the trickle doesn't become a surge of money that would spill into salaries for security forces. The elected representatives of the Palestinians can feed their hatred of Israel and stand proud in their celebration of violence and their refusal to negotiate. If so, they can watch their people sink further into poverty and desperation. Unfortunately, Hamas seems only too willing to exploit the suffering of its people for political purposes.
