Palestinian Leader Abbas Appoints Deputy, Shows How Out-of-Touch PA Leadership Has Become
(New York Times) Adam Rasgon - The Palestine Liberation Organization's executive committee met in the West Bank on Saturday night to allow Mahmoud Abbas, the aging Palestinian Authority president, to appoint a longtime loyalist, Hussein al-Sheikh, as deputy chairman of the committee. Al-Sheikh said on social media that he also now bore the title of "vice president of the State of Palestine." "The ship is sinking, and everyone's fighting over who's going to be seated at what table," said Ghaith al-Omari, a former adviser to Abbas and a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
