Protecting the International Criminal Court

(Wall Street Journal) Editorial - The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a rogue operation that equates Israel with Hamas and has threatened to charge Americans with war crimes for fighting terrorists. Senate Democrats voted Tuesday to protect the court by blocking a bipartisan sanctions bill that has already passed the House. Two Democratic senators voted no, despite having supported the bill last year when they were in the House. When the House passed the ICC sanctions bill again this month, 42 Democrats joined Republicans in support. Minority leader Chuck Schumer claimed that the bill's language could ensnare U.S. tech companies whose services are used by the ICC. Yet, it isn't clear why tech companies should be exempt from sanctions if banks and other companies aren't. Failing to pass it in the Senate will put the matter in President Trump's hands, and he may go further than the bill Mr. Schumer blocked. With its warrants to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and his former defense chief, the ICC has become an anti-Western menace. The warrants accuse the pair of "crimes against humanity and war crimes" for Israel's defensive war against Hamas. The ICC is clearly anti-Israel, but the theory behind its warrants threatens any democracy that must fight against terrorists who hide behind civilians in hospitals, schools and mosques.
