Brandeis Professor Listened, Helpless, as Hamas Closed In on His Family
(Washington Post) Frances Vinall - Ilan Troen, a professor emeritus of Israel Studies at Brandeis University, answered a call from his daughter, Deborah Matias, at about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. She could hear gunshots and glass breaking, she told him. He next heard from his 16-year-old grandson, Rotem. Deborah, 50, and her husband, Shlomi, 49, were dead. Rotem was injured. His parents had saved him using their own bodies to protect him, but militants were still searching Kibbutz Holit, where the family lived near the border with Gaza.
