Dore Gold - In July 2020, the U.S. energy giant Chevron announced it was acquiring Noble Energy, which operates Israel's Leviathan and Tamar gas fields in the Eastern Mediterranean. Chevron's entry into the Israeli gas market is revolutionary. Until now, the largest multinational oil companies have refrained from investing in Israeli oil and gas. Today there is a growing concern regarding America's possible pullback from the Middle East, including its naval presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. Chevron's recent move paves the way to an invigorated U.S.-Israel alliance in the fields of energy and security in the region. The writer, former Director-General of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Israeli Ambassador to the UN, is president of the Jerusalem Center.
