Ceasefire in Syria Cements Assad's Territorial Gains in Idlib
(Reuters) Tuvan Gumrukcu - After talks with Russian President Putin in Moscow on Thursday, Turkish President Erdogan announced a ceasefire accord which cements territorial gains by Russian-backed Syrian forces over Turkish-backed rebels in Syria's Idlib province. The agreement, if it holds, does stem the advance of Assad's forces. But by freezing the front lines, the deal consolidates Assad's recent battlefield victories and allows Russia to deploy deeper into Idlib than before. In Moscow, the deal was widely seen as a triumph for Putin and Assad at Erdogan's expense.
