Palestine and the Jews

(Mosaic) Philologos - As anti-Israel demonstrators chant "Palestine will be free / From the river to the sea!" I recall the blue-and-white Jewish National Fund collection box in my parents' New York apartment in 1947-48 on which was written: "Fight for a Free Palestine!" The term "Palestine" was used since the early 19th century, when it replaced the term "the Holy Land" that had been in use in medieval times, though Jews preferred the term "Eretz Israel" - the Land of Israel. After putting down the Bar-Kokhba revolt in 135 CE, the Romans officially renamed their administrative province of Judea as Syria Palaestina, seeking to deny the Jewish connection to it.
