Gaza Electricity Reduced after PA Refuses to Pay

(Jerusalem Post) Tovah Lazaroff - For the last few months the PA has cut electricity to Gaza by limiting what it pays for electricity. Israel supplies 125 MW of electricity to Gaza and the PA pays the monthly bill of NIS 40 million. This week the PA told Israel it would only pay NIS 25-30 million a month. Maj.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, told BBC Arabic Radio, "This is an internal Palestinian issue and not an Israeli-Palestinian issue." Gaza's power plant, which had provided 120 MWs, shut down in April, unable to pay the taxes the PA imposed on the diesel fuel to run it. Since then, people in Gaza have lived with four to six hours of electricity a day, which may now decline to three hours.
