(Institute for National Security Studies) Ephraim Kam - In November 2016, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces announced that Iran may establish naval bases in Yemen or Syria. These remarks reflect Iran's hegemonic aspirations in the Middle East. The establishment of Iranian naval bases relatively close to Israel gives Israel a more convenient possibility of destroying them if necessary, for example, in retaliation for an Iranian provocation.
