A Deal with the Devil? Why Washington Should Not Pin Its Hopes on Rouhani


(Foreign Affairs) Michael Singh - American policymakers should not offer additional concessions to Iran on the theory that a nuclear deal will yield ancillary security benefits. If the U.S. wishes to obtain not just a lasting nuclear accord but also a broader shift in Iranian strategic thinking, they will have to persuade the whole regime - not just one faction of it - that the status quo is unsustainable. This will require persuading Iranian leaders that failing to reach an agreement is a price too high to pay. The writer is managing director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
