LA Times Misleads on Israel and International Law

(CAMERA) Ricki Hollander and Tamar Sternthal - On Oct. 15, Tracy Wilkinson falsely declared in the Los Angeles Times that the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and American recognition of Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights all contravene international law. There is no international law that prohibits other countries' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. While there are controversial, politically-based UN resolutions, they constitute recommendations rather than accepted international law. Indeed, moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem is the implementation of longstanding U.S. policy, as stated in the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, which was in force for over two decades before the move.
