U.S. Blocks UN Security Council Statement that Fails to Condemn Hizbullah

The U.S. called for Hizbullah to be specifically condemned in the text. The U.S. said it was impossible for it to back any statement putting Israel's right to self-defense on an equal footing with Hizbullah, a "terrorist organization." Several other members of the Security Council objected to the U.S. stance, and the text was eventually abandoned. Any statement by the council must be backed by all 15 members.
