His recent speeches have emphasized Turkey's Ottoman history and domestic achievements over Western ideas and influences. Erdogan seeks to put religion at the heart of national life after decades of secular dominance, and the government is pumping billions of dollars into religious education. The expansion of religious education is unsettling some Turks. Critics have accused Erdogan of rolling back the secular state founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.
