Islamic State Determined to Produce Chemical Weapons

(AP) Hamza Hendawi - The Islamic State is aggressively pursuing development of chemical weapons, setting up a branch dedicated to research and experiments with the help of scientists from Iraq, Syria and elsewhere, according to Iraqi and U.S. intelligence officials. The group has used mustard gas on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria. Sameer al-Khalifawy, a senior deputy to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, wrote in a 2013 report to al-Baghdadi of "significant progress" toward producing chemical weapons, according to two senior officials with access to the document, obtained by Iraqi intelligence.
