(Los Angeles Times) Robin Wright - Many of the roughly 50,000 Kurdish fighters, with another 50,000 part-time volunteers, yearn to play the same role in Iraq that the Northern Alliance played alongside U.S. troops in ending the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan. Yet the Kurds have limited firepower - Russian rifles and machine guns bought years ago from Iran and a few artillery pieces smuggled through Turkey.
