Top Cleric Brokers Deal to End Battle in Najaf

(Washington Post) In an agreement brokered by top Shi'ite religious figure Ayatollah Ali Sistani, rebellious cleric Moqtada al-Sadr agreed Thursday to withdraw his militia from Najaf. In exchange, U.S. military forces will pull out of Najaf, and Sadr, who had been wanted by the former U.S. occupation authority on murder charges, will be allowed to participate in Iraqi politics. However, Sadr has reneged on peace deals in the past.
